Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s)
What are they?
AHA’s are a group of natural and synthetic ingredients, when properly formulated and used, gives the benefit of exfoliating the top layers of skin, revealing refined, smoother, more hydrated and over time firmer skin.
Different Types of AHA’s:
- Glycolic Acid
- Lactic Acid
- Mandelic Acid
- Citric Acid
- Malic Acid
- Tartaric Acid
Glycolic Acid
- Most common AHA
- Derived from sugar cane
- Synthetic, more stable, version also available and used in skincare
- Considered the gold standard in AHA’s (most research, most effective results)
- Strongest Acid – care to be taken when deciding suitable percentage for your skin type and concern.
- If not used properly, can cause irritation
- Due to its small molecule size, easy penetration into upper layers of skin to reveal healthier skin under
- Can be used on its own, or combined with other acids. 5% is a good starting point.
- Always test patch any new product before use
- Best used as a night treatment, followed by an SPF30 or 50 the next morning.
- Always use SPF/sunscreen.
